One way of describing the role of race in American history is to use the metaphor of an earthquake. It can be said that the issue of race was a tremor from 1619 to 1861; then there was a Great Earthquake, the Civil War from 1861-to-1865; and everything thereafter has been aftershocks, from 1865 to the present.
