Investigators are testing a .45-caliber Remington to determine if the handgun was used in a murder after disappearing from the Harvey police station where it was being held as evidence in an illegal weapon case, sources said Wednesday.

The gun was handed over to investigators this past weekend at the police station in south suburban Robbins, sources said. Its serial number matches the gun Detective Hollis Dorrough allegedly removed from evidence in a 2005 weapon case against Anthony T. Reynolds, the sources said.

Prosecutors discovered the gun was missing when they went to court against Reynolds in July on the weapon charge. In August, they charged Dorrough with official misconduct for allegedly handing the weapon to Reynolds' stepfather.

Mayor denies involvement

At Dorrough's bond hearing, prosecutors said an unnamed Harvey official -- identified by sources as Mayor Eric Kellogg -- told Dorrough to make the gun disappear. Kellogg denies any involvement with the missing gun.
Investigators are testing the Remington to see if it was used in any other crimes, including an April 28 murder allegedly committed by Reynolds at a South Holland car wash while he was out on bond on the 2005 weapon charge, sources said.

A .45-caliber pistol was used in the killing, but the weapon was not recovered at the time, police said. Bullet casings from the murder scene are being compared to the recovered Remington to see if they match, the sources said.
